Comic-Con International is the world capital of fandom. Every year, 130,000 people flock to San Diego for a five-day marathon of Hollywood star power, sensory overload, gigantic shopping bags, grand feats of imagination, tacky nostalgia, very long lines, and people dressed up as Princess Leia. It's the place where people who love the fantastic side of culture go to express that love, and where the companies that want to sell them fantasies in every possible medium try desperately to woo them. Douglas Wolk (author of the Eisner Award-winning "Reading Comics How Graphic Novels Work and What They Mean") plunges into Comic-Con's bizarre collision of fans and franchises, and looks at what happens when the marketers of movies, TV shows, comics and games meet their most devoted, most demanding consumers.
ComicCon Strikes Again! Single edition by Douglas Wolk Politics Social Sciences eBooks
Before reading Douglas Wolk's Comic-Con Strikes Again I'd always assumed that the annual confab in San Diego was a bit like the cantina scene in Star Wars. News coverage of the event tended to focus on its more "colorful" aspects: costumed participants channeling their favorite comic book, sci-fi and/or super hero movie characters. Likewise, the coverage in publications like Entertainment Weekly focused on the celebrity aspect, panel discussions on television shows and movies, and the buzz about coming attractions. But Wolk goes those sources one better. He goes beyond the stereotypes and the hype to cover not only what Comic-Con is, but what it means and how it affects the entertainment industry. Rather than take the easy route and laugh at the "geeks" who attend the event as so many media do, Wolk offers insight into fan culture and a bit of an overview of its history.
From its humble beginnings forcusing only on comic books and artists four decades ago to the essential showcase that can make or break new films and television shows, Comic-Con has become - whether most of us are aware of it or not - a major player in determining what becomes part of our modern culture. Wolk has done the rest of us (who may not have picked up a comic book in years or who have no idea who Janga Fett is) a service in providing a clear-eyed look at an major annual event that plays a role in making pop culture pop.

ComicCon Strikes Again! Single edition by Douglas Wolk Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
Being that I have been going to Comic Con since 2004, I very much enjoyed this Single. The author describes the event in detail, even the horrendous morning of booking a hotel on your computer. This was a great read, whether you have been to Comic Con or not, and I highly recommend it to other readers. Once I started the book, I could not put it down!
I must confess that I do not think I have the fortitude myself ever to attend Comic-Con - but this account of it is almost as good as (possibly better than!) actually being there! Wise, interesting, funny, vivid - I read it in one sitting, couldn't put it down. A very good use of the Single format.
I thoroughly enjoyed this short single! Even though it is a few years old now, I think it is still quite relevant. A look at this pop culture phenomenon through the author's eyes! I will never be attending Comic-Con, which, by the way, covers WAY more than comics, so it was a pleasant way for me to enjoy the trip from the comfort of my home!
Definitely recommended! If you have ever been, ever wanted to go or never even heard of it, pick this one up. It will hold your attention and not take up a lot of your time!
Written by a participant/journalist, this multi-chapter article answers the question many of us outsiders ask about Comic-Con Why?
It's a slideshow in words as the author explains why media giants come, what makes superfans tick, where various pockets of pop culture congregate during the convention, and how the whole shabang is perceived by old-timers. Never too specific to one franchise but touching on many, this is a quick read from a sympathetic apologist for fandom.
Douglas Wolk was pretty much spot-on in his analysis of Comic-Con culture here, and that was pretty impressive. This is more than just a fan account of the infamous geek event - it's a serious dissection of many of the pillars of the convention, the fans who go there and a lot of the rationale behind the entire event.
In addition to this rather intellectual discussion of geek culture, he also does a great job of recreating many aspects of the event itself. His use of language is vivid and quite imaginative and as a reader you can't help but feel compelled to follow along. My only regret that this was just a Single - but this book has definitely inspired me to look up more of his work in the future.
The Single, "Comic-Con Strikes Again!" drops readers right in the midst of the biggest comic book and multi-media convention in the world, letting us enjoy through the author's eyes all the rabid fandom, costumed craziness, relentless (and more sophisticated than I thought) efforts on the part of producers and publishers to create or expand interest in their intellectual properties, and- most of all- the heady mixture of intensity, fun, and weariness that comprises the San Diego Comic-Con experience. Reminding me of the kind of long, meaty article to be found in my Sunday newspaper's magazine section, "Comic-Con Strikes Again!" is well worth its modest price for both readers already familiar with the whole convention-going thing, or curious outsiders. Douglas Wolk wrote a fun, informative article, and I look forward to his future writings about the entertainment industry and its fans.
When I was a teenager and young adult, I dwelled on the fringes of weird. I looked perfectly normal on the outside, but the older I got, the more I learned to greatly enjoy sci fi, fantasy, and various role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons (although the appeal of anime did and still does escape me.) One of the things my group of friends and I always thought would be cool was to go to Comic-Con. This Single (picked up for a mere .99) is a far too brief look into the juggernaut that is Comic-Con. The writing is very good (although perhaps overusing the word "cathexis") and deals with a fascinating subject most ignore sci fi/fantasy fandom. While it touches on many of the various aspects of attending Comic-Con (e.g. long lines, costumes, merchandise), it's so short I was left with the feeling of a rock skipping over a pond. Honestly, the only disappointment I had with this book was that there was not a great deal more of it. DEFINITELY worth the .99.
