Hat-making is an art which may be acquired by any one possessing patience and ordinary ability. To make a hat for the trade is not as difficult as to make one for an individual; neither is it so high a phase of art. Many rules are given for crown-height, brim-width, and color, as being suited to different types of faces, but they are so often misleading that it seems best to consider only a few, since the becomingness of a hat almost invariably depends upon minor characteristics of the individual for which there are no rules.

This book gas no photos or illustrations, although there is a list of illustrations in the beginning of the book. This omission makes the book not very useful to those looking for clarifications or quick identification of the techniques they will to use. I have purchased another book that is much more helpful, though expensive (Hats!: Make Classic Hats and Headpieces in Fabric, Felt, and Straw) and am sorry that this one could not be more helpful as i often find these old books very knowledgeable on the topics they cover.Product details

Make Your Own Hats Gene Allen Martin 9781366496799 Books Reviews
Was excited to get this book but that soon turned to great disappointment-no illustrations. The version has replaced the illustrations with descriptions in all caps. Since it is very hard to learn a visual art form without visual references, I cannot give this volume, or the lack of disclosure about the absence/replacement of illustrations my recommendation.
I have just glanced through this booklet so far, but it seems pretty interesting projects
Always looking for new projects for presents.
I love vintage hats. Started collecting not long ago and have learned so much using this and other information not necessarily published. If you're into making your own hats as a hobby, this book is cool. However, The best way to learn is by doing.
This has lots of great information however as a visual learner it would have been nice to have illustrations. The descriptions of things helped but visual learners may prefer another source.
As a seamstress I read this book looking for techniques I could learn from. I was amazed at the technical detail identifying materials used, descriptions of their manufacture and usage, for 'hat infrastructure'. I got a new appreciation of the skill needed by milliners who constructed hats. This, in the days when beautifully constructed hats were made with more manual skill than mechanical processes. Very enlightening.
I love making my own clothing, quilts, knits but I have to admit to never thinking of making hats. When I saw this title
in the library I decided it will be a fun read. And it was!
This book is very serious about hats. Here are a couple of delightful quotes that express the spirit of this book
"Simplicity is the keynote of beauty ... unless it is the hat." and
"If you look at a plant, you find it dark near the ground, growing lighter near the top with its green leaves, and then the blossom; the glory is at the top. Everything in nature teaches us to look up. So the hat should be the crowning glory of a costume."
Then the book plunges into hat making - from wires and meshes to ribbons and feathers. Unfortunately, the addition has no images. However, the descriptions in the book are very detailed and give you a good idea of the process even without the pictures.
I don't know if I'll ever take up hat making, but this book surely gave me a better appreciation of hats when I see them on TV.
This book gas no photos or illustrations, although there is a list of illustrations in the beginning of the book. This omission makes the book not very useful to those looking for clarifications or quick identification of the techniques they will to use.
